Here’s what HarperTeen says about Wings: Laurel discovers she is a faerie, sent among humans to protect the gateway to Avalon. Thrust into the midst of a centuries-old battle between faeries and trolls, she’s torn between a human and a faerie love, as well as her loyalties to each world. In this extraordinary tale of magic and intrigue, romance and danger, everything you thought you knew about faeries will be changed forever.
This book didn’t delve into the faerie world as much as I would have liked, but it still captivated me. Some of the dialogue was a little weak, but the overall premise for Aprilynne Pike’s Wings was a great one, and it has the ability to continue into a series. I was happy to see that there is sequel out, called Spells where Laurel will get to discover more about her faerie roots. No pun intended since in Pike’s world of faeries, they are actually plants. The science nerd in me loved David and his microscope, and the scientific explanation about Laurel being an evolved plant. I could have done without the story about Laurel’s dad, but I guess it added some suspense to the book. I’m looking forward to Spells and seeing how Pike develops her characters. I’ll give this book a B because I definitely enjoyed it.
